I took this image in the same bus shelter as the ...burger joint in the rain... image except now we are dealing with the cold of winter (the air temperature this day was -23C with a windchill of -33C) rather than just a cold rain. I made use of the auto level effect in CS2 and the picture took on a metallic feel which I appreciate. I must apologize for the small size of this posting but a search for the original and the original of a number of other pictures taken during late 2006 and early 2007 has revealed that I had forgotten to save them to a CD and deleted them from my computer. And for many years after that I had San Francisco as a destination and I'll always have San Francisco and the wonderful memories of the weeks that I spent there wandering the streets and seeing the sights and the people of the city. In PS in channel mixer in the green output channel I set red, green, blue to 0%, then in channel mixer in the red output channel I set red to 50% and green and blue to 0%. I then heightened contrast to +30 and finally I used equalize with opacity set at 100% and the mode set to luminosity. One could further adjust in the red channel and have just a blue image but I like the contrast between the blue and purple in the posted image. I particularly like the flow of the fence which works to lead the eyes of the viewer through the image. The buildings on the right were formerly part of the Canadian National Terminal and are now market and museum. The steel armatures seen in the distance form a circle around the Oodean Celebration Circle (Oodena, Cree for centre of the city, features ethereal sculptures, a sundial, interpretive signage, a naked eye observatory and a ceremonial fire pit, making it a desirable venue for Aboriginal and cultural celebrations). The gaps between the monoliths align with solstice and equinox sunrises and sunsets. Steel armatures mounted on the monoliths define precise sightlines for visitors to view specific stars. In CS2 I used shadow highlight and levels. According to the information officer approximately 7000 Lancasters were built but today there are only 2 still flying... this one and one in the United Kingdom. There was a three hour waiting period to get inside the Lancaster. I don't think that the people looking after the Lancaster being in Winnipeg expected the turnout that they got. The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, Hamilton, Ontario has dedicated its Mynarski Memorial Lancaster to the memory of Pilot Officer Andrew Charles Mynarski, VC, of 419 (Moose) Squadron, 6 (RCAF) Group. Mynarski won 6 Group's only Victoria Cross, the Commonwealth's highest award for gallantry in battle. On the night of 12/13 June 1944, his Lancaster X was shot down by a Luftwaffe night fighter. As the bomber plunged earthwards, Mynarski, his flying clothing afire, tried in vain to free his trapped rear gunner from the jammed rear turret. Miraculously, the gunner lived to relate the story of Mynarski's bravery. Unfortunately, Mynarski died from his severe burns. This picture was taken on August 4, 2009. This past week (August 2010) the Avro was back again in Winnipeg as part of its annual tour of North American locations. In CS3 shadow/highlight (40,5,10). When the Province of Manitoba took over the care of orphans in 1948, Asile Ritchot closed its doors, reopening in 1954 as an Oblate Seminary. The Oblates vacated this seminary in approximately 1970 and the X-Kalay Foundation took over the complex shortly thereafter. The X-Kalay Foundation evolved through the Saint Norbert Foundation to its present name of the Behavioural Health Foundation. The Behavioural Health Foundation provides long term residential addictions treatment programming for men, women, teens and family units experiencing a variety of addiction problems and co-occurring mental health concerns. For me the connection with the Foundation ran from the day it first opened in September 1971 until I retired in September 1997. I lived here... I worked here... I can see the structure from my apartment window. When you step through these gates you step into what remains of the very beginning of Winnipeg, Manitoba. In the beginning there was Fort Rouge built by La Verendrye in 1738 but because of frequent springtime flooding the location was moved to higher ground with Upper Fort Garry being constructed in 1835 by the Hudson's Bay Company. I quote from a recent article that appeared in the Winnipeg Sun concerning the refurbishing of the site. "It was home to governors and it was the first home of the Manitoba government. This isn't just some old department store where your grandfather used to work. This is a real artifact. And we allow dogs to urinate on it. Anything less than fully refurbishing the gate, cleaning up the site and fencing it off for security reasons would be a disgrace. This has thing has to be saved." The city has budgeted funds to refurbish the gate. The next step is to decide whether to rebuild parts of it and expand it onto adjoining land. As the person who wrote the article said: "We do a better job protecting our park benches." Now it is 2010 and this summer work is beginning to use the remaining wall of Upper Fort Garry as the foundation for the renovation of the existing fort and to bring the first step on the road to the city of Winnipeg back to life. Of course in the end no matter which way you cut it... the historic roots of Winnipeg are pretty small potatoes in comparison to other historic structures and locations I've seen at PC over the past months. Our father had the ability to do anything with his hands. He was a blacksmith by trade but he could work with anything but in the time I knew my father I never placed much value on that ability... what can I say I was just a teenager with a bad attitude. My father passed away 28 years ago while I left home 37 years ago and I never really knew him. I lived in Vancouver B.C. with my mother and my Dad worked in small logging camps along the B.C. coast for six months at a time so until he retired I might see him twice a year for a couple of weeks. This picture was taken with an old Kodak box camera nearly 60 years ago and I took a digital shot of the original snapshot using the macro setting on my Nikon CP775. It's not the greatest picture in the world but I just like the image of my father's hands holding me as a little boy. It is really a shame that memories like this vanish from our memory so I say thank god for cameras and photographers. Port Hardy, B.C. Then one of the parents of the goslings being chased started going after the adult and then chaos broke out. These are the first goslings that I've seen this Spring. Normally by this time of the year this area at the Forks is swarming with ducks and geese and their offspring. I think the lack of ducks and geese is the result of the local rivers being in flood stage since the snow melt and runoff and the heavy rainfall that has been occurring over the last couple of weeks. Probably difficult to maintain a nesting area and the ducks and the geese have gone elsewhere to have their families. Not really animals at play but I just couldn't resist posting this photograph. I never did find out the name of the lake. I was on a drive along Highway 2 from North Dakota to Vancouver, B.C. just outside of Libby, Montana and I had stopped for a moment as a rainstorm swept through the area. I liked the combination of the reflective quality of the lake and the quality of the clouds. It doesn't look like anything very striking and in reality it is just to the north of a parking lot for a restaurant in Trinidad, California but for years this picture used to hang over my desk at work and either when the weather outside would turn to a Manitoba winter with cold and snow and wind or when I felt rather down after a day of work I would look at this picture and it would bring me back to a time of being in Trinidad, California walking the beaches or taking a hike through the woods surrounding the town or having a quiet dinner in a restaurant on the pier. This is a picture of a Don Starkell who kayaks the Red River and Assiniboine River through most of the year when the rivers are free of ice. Through various trips and adventures, Don Starkell built a 64-year legacy as one of North America's most respected canoeists and kayakers, telling of his adventures in a pair of books. In Paddle to the Amazon, Starkell and his son Dana faced a 23-month, 20,000-kilometre canoe journey from Winnipeg to the Amazon in the 1980s -- an adventure that earned the duo a Guinness record for the longest canoe trip ever. Contrasting that trek was Paddle to the Arctic, an account of a solo trip covering the Northwest Passage by kayak. Starkell lost portions of his fingers and a few toes to frostbite during that 1990 expedition. At the age of 77, Don Starkell may have paddled farther than any other human being has ever paddled. Back in August 2009 he was closing in on a new milestone -- paddling 120,226 kilometres, a distance equal to three times the circumference of the Earth -- Starkell believed he was the rightful holder of the world record for the most kilometres paddled by a human being over the course of a lifetime. In 2009, his routine on paddling days involved waking up at 2:45 a.m., leaving his East Kildonan home and hitting the water by 4 a.m. in order to paddle 22 kilometres along the Red and Assiniboine Rivers. In late March 2010 he was injured quite seriously in a fire in his home in the north end. f8.5 1/350 105mm

13 comments janper44 Sat, 10 Apr 2010 19:08:09 -0600 View from the Point http://www.perfectlycaptured.com/showphoto.php?photo=8244

by: janper44

Description: I was taking a walk here today and I thought I would like to post a picture that would show this view to its best advantage... rather than the barren look that I found on this Spring day. This photograph looks south along the Red River from the Point Douglas area towards the downtown area of Winnipeg. The posted view was taken August 23, 2008 and in CS3 I used the shadow/highlight function (50,10,40). The sculpture is titled The Point by Jordan Van Sewell. Nicknamed “The Point,” North Point Douglas is defined by a bend in the Red River in the heart of Winnipeg. Because the Canadian Pacific Railway’s passenger terminal was located in the area, North Point Douglas became the drop-off point for early immigrants to Winnipeg. In the 1880s, North Point Douglas was home to many wealthy businessmen and entrepreneurs, but by the turn of century, it became more industrialized due to its proximity to the railroad. Prosperity faded as residents moved to newer North End neighbourhoods, leaving behind mostly new immigrants and poorly-paid factory workers. Today, North Point Douglas is home to many Aboriginal people; nearly 40 per cent of North Point Douglas residents identify as Métis or Aboriginal, compared with just ten per cent in the whole of Winnipeg (2006 census shows Winnipeg with a population of 671,274). Stopped in a little town called Oasis off the freeway that seemed to consist of one building... gas station, restaurant, pool hall, what have you. It would have been nice to have taken this image with a flash but I didn't have the flash unit available and I just had time for one photograph before I left. In PS I used auto level while in Virtual Photographer I made use of the classic mode in bw. Maybe just time for one game before we go? No, she said and on we drove. You will have to excuse the small size of this posting. I tried several times to increase the size of the image working from the original but I could not get any picture significantly larger than this image while maintaining the toning of the posted picture. Since October of 2004 the sun has not been shining in my apartment window and so for a brief minute it shone palely on my apartment wall and then it was gone but I knew it was going to be returning each and every day until the October of 2005. I just wanted to do something with that brief bolt of light shining through the blinds on my living room window. The original image was a single sunbeam shining through the blinds on my living room window onto to an adjacent wall. From Flaming Pear I used the chromasolarize effect, sphere warp A function, swerve effect, crop, and flood effect. In the words of Bruce Springsteen "...we're just dancing in the dark..." Now that brief bolt of light dances in the darkness. I had started walking back from the 19 mile post at the Marathon... first to take pictures of the leaders (at mile 19 two guys were running shoulder to shoulder and at the end of the marathon there was only 14 seconds between first and second place at just over 2 hours and 27 minutes) and then to find various locations along the route to take pictures of the various runners. I just made it to the Norwood Bridge with the racers coming up the slope of the bridge when the CN train came across the background bridge and still further back was the apartment block where I live... not the best picture I took that day but the picture that I liked the most because it had action, trains with my apartment block anchoring the image. In CS3 I used the shadow highlight function (50,5,20).

9 comments janper44 Mon, 22 Mar 2010 18:13:09 -0600 The Carnival http://www.perfectlycaptured.com/showphoto.php?photo=8066

by: janper44

Description: It was near summer and everyone wanted to go to the carnival. So I shot some rolls of film and I got this particular picture from my apartment window on January 31, 2010 around 2 in the afternoon when the temperature outside was -25C. It was so cold that everything seemed to be freezing in place... literally turning blue before my eyes. I did a severe cropping on the picture since a reflection of my blinds showed through along the bottom edge of the picture. In CS3 I used the shadow/highlight function (50,5,20) and in Virtual Photographer I used the classic09 effect.

6 comments janper44 Fri, 19 Mar 2010 19:00:00 -0600 boys and their toys http://www.perfectlycaptured.com/showphoto.php?photo=7997

by: janper44

Description: I took this picture at the World of Wheels in Winnipeg in 2009. I was trying to get people into the same photograph with the vintage cars and I wasn't succeeding too well... people think they are stepping into my range while I was trying to get them into my range. Finally I got this photograph of the gentleman bending over for a closer view of 1932 Ford... captured the sense of the exhibition for me. Hopefully I'll have better fortunate in a couple of weeks when the World of Wheels returns to Winnipeg. In CS3 I used the shadow/highlight function (50,5,20)and levels (white auto).
