I see I have PMs to answer and also emails from members which I will answer shortly. I hope to be back in photographic circulation soon but this post is to let past shuttercity users know of the death of Roy Williams on US memorial day. Here is his obit posted today in the Toronto Star: [ link ]
As you can see he lived a full life and was still active in photography. We conversed quite regularly by email about photography, his local camera club and WWII. One thing not mentioned in his obit is that Roy was a member (probably the last), of the photographic team aboard USS Missouri to record the Japanese surrender and in fact Roy was responsible for the development and printing of the negatives that have since been published worldwide. This came to light after one of our chats when he was clearing some cupboard space and came across his personal copies which he scanned and sent to me along with links to news coverage from the time. He also had a wealth of images from post war Berlin and the airlift.
Some years ago after a 10 year hiatus Roy decided to start taking pictures again (he'd stopped when digital came in although he was still secretary of the Mississauga camera club). I was pleased to help him find his way through the menus of his new D300 and to set up his camera to be used as he would his old film bodies. A few weeks later I received through the post a very heavy volume of full plate Canadian wildlife pictures. Roy was generous to fault in all ways and I will miss our chats which, because of his attitude even in his nineties of always looking on the bright side, never failed to lift my own spirits.
RIP Roy.

A very touching image for both the passing of Roy Williams but also for the remembrance of a great online site; namely, Shuttercity. So interesting to hear about Roy being on the photographic team aboard the USS Missouri to record the surrender of Japan at the end WWII.

Thank you for sharing Vic.

A powerful tribute to Roy and I remember those pictures of the Japanese surrender on the U.S.S. Missouri - never knew it was Roy that took them. Thanks so much for posting the beautiful tribute pic and for the information about Roy - a giant of a photographer.

Great picture Vick and the interesting information you gave regarding Roy Williams. I didn't know the gentleman concerned, but the obit in the Toronto Star was quite moving.
