This picture taken with the 90mm f2 has been only slightly cropped. I got close by my usual method of approaching as if walking past rather than straight towards the stag which would cause it to run when I got within 50 yds. They are wild but are used to people and horse riders. I had my 55-200mm attached to another body but the 90mm has something special in its rendering. Ultra-sharp with a beautiful soft bokeh and best of all, a swift yet gentle transition between the two extremes. It was an expensive GAS buy (GAS = gear acquisition syndrome), a luxury lens that has become irreplaceable to the extent that I fit it then go looking for opportunities that suit its use. Surprisingly, they are many.
My only worry is that with such a sharp subject and soft background it may look like a photo of a diorama.

There is the sense of a photo of a diorama with the red deer stag in such sharpness while the background forest is soft but that sense is overcome by your comments and I would find it difficult to even want to get within 50 yards of this stag with that set of antlers. A well detailed image (right down to the catch lights in the eyes which one knows would not be possible with a diorama).

Thats a big Beasty Vic, seems to be taking quite an interest in the camera / lens combination you are using, probably hoping he is posing nicely for you.....
Very sharp, stands out nicely from the background, nice image Vic and quite daring with a 90mm lens...

Great photo Vic, he looks so proud and stands out well from the background. I must have a read up on the lens,
Dave
