Sheep on the wild fells of Northern Cumbria. I chased these up the fellside to get this shot. I was in my good shoes too as we had been out for Mothers day pub lunch and so I was dressed smarter than is usual for me.

And they seemed rather surprised to see you, all decked out in whatever finery you had on. Fine detail and color, not at all what I think of when I hear the word "sheep."

Beautiful capture. How brave of you to chase them down in your finery. I love the colors and clarity. Do you know why they are marked with red? Is that so the owners can tell their sheep from others?

The coloured marks on the sheep's back (the ewes) are made by a device called a raddle that the farmer straps to the chest of the ram. The raddle holds a dyestuff which is released when the ram mounts the ewe. The farmer will change the colour after a while and that way he can tell by the colour on the ewe when she is likely to have her lambs. :-))

So glad you had your "climbing legs" with you to chase these sheep up the hill and get that capture. I've never seen sheep that look like this. You've captured all the details wonderfully. What does the orange marking on their backs mean?

Well worth the struggle in your good 'gear' Bev. Excellent colour and nice clear detail. The raddle has not been used out here for a number of years and when it was used it was to indicate which ram had serviced what ewes. These days the farmer puts one ram per paddock (field) of ewes.

Excellent details - the sheep stand out so well against the background. And really informative too - I no longer think that sheep with coloured backs are the product of rural graffiti artists
Cheers....Mark

Hi, Bev,
So you go out chasing sheep in dress clothes, eh?? It seems well worth the effort. Wonderful color, brilliant detail and I love how you caught those two looking right at you. Very well done!! Smile)
