This W/E, Mick and I took a 700 mile steam train trip pulled by 46115, The Scots Guardsman, around the north of England encompassing the West and East Midlands, Lincolnshire, East and West Yorkshire, Cumbria (Settle to Carlisle line and Ribblehead viaduct) the Borders (Hadrian's wall),and County Durham. Unfortunately, and although we boarded at 5.30am Saturday morning and disembarked at 12.30am Sunday morning, much of the journey was done in darkness and the weather (misty and wet), was not kind so we got just a couple of shots worth posting. This was taken at night under sodium lamps. I used a monopod and braced against a signpost for this ambient light capture. I perhaps should have used the less noisy D300 but as usual I simply picked up the appropriate lens regardless of what was hanging on the other end of it. This was taken at ISO 1250 and I haven't used NR either in-camera or editor. This is the website where you can download the brochure so that anyone living near these steam trips can find where to go to photograph them as they pass through the Great British countryside. Now this is a class shot Vic ..considering all the clutter as they changed engines at York you managed to get a clear spell. The large shot is amazing and too be honest if anyone is looking for noise then they are sad people indeed.I do like the wispy steam caused by the longish exposure. To everyone else who views this shot ..I was carrying his kit (somethings never change)

I believe I saw this earlier today. I don't believe anything has changed with the perfection with which you executed the photograph. Just great work.

Wow Vic - this is a dynamite shot. It just screams POWER! Excellent in B&W, and the composition, lighting and tonal range couldn't be better! You took this at 1250 iso and had no noise? I guess that's what a good camera can do.. Very impressive capture!!!

Excellent work Vic. That is one long train trip, something I would love to do...one day a Trans Australia for me. The black and white works well and the image has very good detail,

I really like this one Vic. Your exposure and lens work perfectly. Steady hand you had indeed. What a cool trip you took, but more day light and less rain I am sure would have made it better. Getting this shot though had to make it worth while. I need a Mike to carry my kits .. Smile

As I've told you elsewhere, I really like this one, Vic. Great job under those conditions and it's amazing how little noise is evident.

Hi Vic.
I think the high ISO and noise add grain which suits this superb image very well. The effect of the longish exposure on the steam adds great atmosphere to the shot! A truely exceptional image, and very well taken.
Reagrds Vic.
