Bee Flies have hairy bodies and long, slender legs. The proboscis is long, points forward, and is adapted for feeding on flower nectar. Seen bordered with Pink Oxalis Wildflowers. Handheld at ground level in a prone position, natural mid-day light.
Finalist in the Windland Smith Rice International Awards for 2010.

A great image for being a handheld composition with the form of the bee fly framed by the blur of its wings with both of these elements then being framed by the pink wild flowers.

Exceptional capture. I love the tack sharp details on this bee - especially his eyes. The DOF is so captivating as the blurred edges of the capture guide my eye right in to the main subject. You've got the steady hands of a surgeon.

Hi Howard,
What a cracking shot! excellent detail on it's head showing that long probosis and great movement in the wings.
This one looks like a Bombylius major, interesting insects too, they feed on the wing avoiding actualy landing on a flower, presumably to avoid becoming an easy meal for crab spiders and the like. Their larvae parasitise a host bee larva so perhaps their naming is as much to do with that than actualy looking like bees as some of the Bombyliidae family bear little resemblance to bees.
Lovely image and perfectly captured, excellent work!
Regards
Vic.

Superb image. Clearly something that takes time, patience and expertise to achieve. I love the way you've positioned the bee fly in the green space between the various flowers. This acts as a perfect frame. Great work. Regards, Paul.
