.... of Rocamadour, France. The lower street of the village you see here is about 500 feet above the valley floor and the village extends to the chateau at the top. So if someone invites you to take a stroll around this village - think twice. The buildings, including the church (which is home to the statue of the "Black Madonna"), extend into the rock face. The church is a place of pilgrimage and is reached by ascending steep flights of stone steps from the valley. At various points where the steps zig-zag back and forth there are shrines - the Stations of the Cross - which the pilgrim must visit and offer their prayers. Hard enough, but I should add that the said pilgrims are expected to make this ascent - on their knees!
Personally I played the agnostic card this day and parked at the top, walked down and then took the elevator which passes through the solid rock back to my car at the top.

A great perspective with all the stonework buildings carrying the eyes of the viewer up to the chateau. The lighting works to enhance the contrast between all the stonework buildings and the blue sky. As I look from this viewpoint I keep thinking about those individuals that had to make his climb every day to construct that chateau... they probably mumbled a lot under their breathe.

Spectacular perspective which really emphasizes the height of the chateau. Those poor pilgrims. I can't imagine the older ones making it. I'm wondering about a little crop on the right..

An absolutely magnificent structure with a somewhat foreboding appeal. I love how it looms over the area below (as seen in another photo).
