A stroll in City Park on the last day of January, the beds of dahlias were looking a bit worse for wear after the heat and an overnight downpour.

The colors of the dahlia and the greenery complement each other while at the same time there is also a degree of contrast which works to give a 3D feel to the dahlia. The clarity of detailing to be found in the dahlia helps to enhance this image for me.

Isn't it amazing how precise nature's design can be! Dalhias and chrysanthemums are testimony to that. As you say, the weather hasn't been kind to the bloom but even so there is such a wonderful soft glow and gradation of hue from the center to the outermost petals.
