The perspective works for me setting the Joshua tree against the sky while the texturing from the Joshua tree, the boulders, and the dry scrub bush helps to enhance the visual impact of the image for me. One wishes that there was a way of cloning out the out of focus boulder in the lower left hand corner without losing any of the Joshua trees above it.

The smaller version works better that the large. As Jan points out, the boulder on the left and grasses below are very soft due to lack of DoF. A shame because they really distract one's attention from an otherwise excellent picture.
