Just shot this Red-bellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) an hour ago this morning. No flash and in the shade through our office window, sunlit background.

The clarity of detailing, the sense of texturing from the plumage and feathering of the bird, and the catchlight in the eye all work hand in hand to create a strong closeup image of the woodpecker.

The details on this very colorful little red-headed woodpecker are so complete and perfectly etched. To capture him with a seed in his mouth is so unique but to capture not only a catch light in his eye AND A REFLECTION....now that's SHOW STOPPING PHOTOGRAPHY!!!

I have to say, your office must have a wonderful situation. You are also lucky to be able to take your camera and tele lens with you to work.
Super, even lighting with crisp detail and great colour. Superb BG colour and bokeh too.

Hi Howard,
I think it's all been said Smile It's a beautiful woodpecker and very finely marked and this is an excellent portrait of it. Great detail for that focal length too!! 840mm or thereabouts. Lovely work!!

Vic.

Thanks for your comments Howard on my pic. of my grandchild. It really helps when such a photographer as yourself makes a positive comment on a pic. (even if it`s not quite up to scratch) It spurs on the likes of myself and others that are fairly new to this game. This pic. of yours, the redhead goes to show that not everytime the full body of a bird needs to be in frame. The colours and the eye carry it off. Thanks again.....Charlie
