Boy that red plumage really stands out strongly in the image but what makes this picture for me is the catchlight in the eye combined with the "styling" pose of the cardinal.

Most unusual pose for this beautiful cardinal. I love the unique gray markings on his wing feathers. What a ham he is - really "hot doggin" for your camera.

Howard, Hi:
The Cardinals are a beautiful bird (both male and female - I think). Interesting positioning of the bird - but - they are very cautious birds and fly alway at the least disturbance. Beautifully done and I am beginning to wish our snow would end and leave a quickly as yours. We are gaining, however, days are longer, sun getting higher and next week we will have a few days with highs in the 40's - progress.
Thanks for the beautiful bird, Howard - a great way to start the day.

A super shot to be sure. I like how the wings appear to be marbled.

One imagines that bright red colour can be a curse when birds of prey are around.
Nice capture Howard.

Great catch, well presented. Nice detail of a hard to capture critter, especially at 300mm and f2.8.

Agree with all of the above! Will add.. great placement in the frame and excellent dof. And nice emphasis on that powerful beak.
