It is interesting that your American barber poles are red, white and blue when they were originally as ours are - red and white only. This stems from the time when barbers were also the people you turned to for surgical cutting perhaps because they had the sharp tools. Even today in London a most respected city livery company is that of the "Barber Surgeons". The red and white of the poles signifies blood and bandages.
