I have observed platypus in the North Esk River on previous occasions but did not sight any at all in 2009. This photo and others taken on the 25th February this year whilst the animal was feeding along the muddy bottom of the river, each time I try and photograph one I get better but I still have a long way to go.

The platypus is widespread in eastern Australia, ranging from tropical lowlands to sub-alpine areas. In Tasmania, the platypus is common in the lakes of the Central Highlands (even in lakes over 914 metres / 2998 feet above sea level), and in rivers and streams of the south, south-west and north-west coasts. Platypuses live in burrows that they dig in the banks of fresh-water rivers, lakes or streams.

I found a tongue in cheek offering about the platypus here, [ link ]

Well now that is something that one doesn't see every day... I hear this morning that kangaroos in the wild have been seen in Japan... what one has to do with the other I don't know... it's too early and a platypus is such a strange looking creature that the story of the kangaroo came to mind.

Definitely the best platypus image I've seen today, Dave. Thanks for the link, I enjoyed the read.

Hello David.
Not bad at all.! Better than I've ever seen a picture of the platypus.
Must say, haven't seen a lot of them, haha
But my complements for this excellent picture. Good hunt.!!!

Hi David,
That's one strange looking creature, although I guess he'd feel the same about me. Wink
Good catch, I've never seen one.
Thanks,
Wilt

Good capture David. I didn't know they were so common in some regions. Have never seen one myself, and so appreciate this image!

For some reason I always assumed these were rare and secretive creatures. Good to know they are not.
