A year ago we took a walk along the side of Catbells overlooking the Newlands valley and down to Newlands Church in the tiny hamlet of Little Town. Mick was around the corner clutching his chest, coughing and searching for his ciggies so I thought I'd better check around the churchyard for vacant spaces.

Something very pleasing about this image... the setting, the flowers in bloom, the sense of peacefulness that flows through the picture. I was just looking at the flowers in front of the grave marker on the left and then I noticed there were two stones in front of Isaac's grave marker... I've seen that before and I wonder what it means?

Hi Vic,
Good POV on this, really sets the image up. Great composition and DOF as well. The flowers are a treat this time of year and set a wonderful mood at the graveyard.
As to ciggies, we just heard today that a very close family friend in Sweden has lung cancer--he smokes, and has, as I did (and many of us I suppose), but he didn't quit.
Anyway, not preaching, just passing it on; I guess this image, and the phone call, made me think.
Thanks,
Wilt

This looks a great place to explore. The textures on the other side of the churchyard and the distant hills appeal to me more than the new tombstones here in the foreground. I'm also not sure about cutting off the corner of the Kathleen's tombstone. Fine exposure and mix of colors.

Nicely composed and perfectly exposed. the perky daffodils scattered around this place of eternal rest gives a peaceful feeling to anyone viewing or visiting the grave sites.

Whilst it is a very nice picture I would like it to be known that I have not had a single cigarette for nearly a year now ... unlike the poster Smile

Nicely done, Vic. Looks like a calm and pleasing place to spend eternity. As to Jan's question, placing stones on a grave is a Jewish tradition (see here for more info - [ link ] Isaac's gravestone clearly has a cross on it but that would not have stopped Jewish visitors from placing stones there.

Good for you, Mick. I smoked for far too many years and it wasn't till my grandson, 2 years old at the time, asked me to stop that I actually quit. That was almost 6 years ago.

Vic,
The daffodils are a sure sign of spring and new life. How appropriate that the cemetery is covered in them. Wonderful detail.

Congratulations Mick..I know how hard it is to quit smoking. I did it at least a thousand times before I was successful.

Read Mick's note. That's what I thought... Very well composed with beautiful foreground and background. These souls couldn't have a more lively resting place. One can almost envision their existence there in that peaceful valley. Excellent Vic.

So many things stand out in the scene. Love the mountain in the b/g and that the area is dotted with daffodils. I noticed, too, the two stones at the foot of one headstone. It is Jewish tradition, I'm told, to leave a stone on the grave to let the family know that it has been visited. It would like a nice place to 'visit.'
