I haven't been able to ID this butterfly yet, it could be a Malachite. The image was recorded at the Butterfly House in Faust Park (near St Louis). A trek of a dozen photographers visited there today.

Most unusual butterfly with brilliant markings. I really like how you exposed this with the available gradient lighting and captured him emerging from the shaded portions of the foliage to "center stage" lighting. Perfect techs.

The coloring and patterning on the wings and body of the butterfly really contrast well with the muted green background foliage and serves to give a 3D feel to the composition. I would be interested in finding out the name of this butterfly? Wish would could take an image like this and plug into Google like you do a word or a term now and get a result.

It's a Green Birdwing, native to Australia.
