It was a rainy and overcast day, which make for challening conditions for a long lens and high speed race cars--as did only being able to shoot through the catch fences; no special tickets or passes for this one.
I wanted decent DOF, but not too much so that the foreground fence could blur out and also wanted a decent shutter speed for hand holding--I left my monopod in the US--so I used a combination of high ISO and aperture preferred, f8, settings.
Not the ideal image, the remaining fence artifacts are annoying, but, I do like the sense of motion conveyed by the red Ferrari as it brakes for the approaching turn as the Red Bull car aims for the apex of the curve. Also, the attention in the faces of the crowd watching the action adds a sense of them moment and excitement I think.
Cropped down from the original, cleaned up using Neat Image, cloned out a pair of birds and sharpened a bit. Shot in RAW and converted to jpeg.

Hi Wilt
Crop up to the corner point of the gravel and cone over the rest then you'll find most of the fence gone. They seemed to judge the mesh size just right to prevent photographers getting pictures don't they?
Anyway you captured this at the right time and place.

Yup, thought about, and tried, that but I really didn't like it that way. I may go back to the original and try leaving more of the top above the back fence and then position the cars more to the bottom, effectively cutting off the lower part as you describe.
Thanks for the thoughts,
Wilt

Hello Wilt.
Good action shot, however with the fencewires in front, hard to get optimum result.
Indeed when the original is big enough, the best imo is to crop above the fencewire and leave only 4 'Qantas' signs in it.
Best regards from Jan

Okay, Vic and Jan,
Took a shot at a new crop. Didn't think I would like it, but actually think it's not too bad.
Thanks for the suggestions.

Pity it wasn't October for your visit Wilt and you could have taken a couple of days out for the V8 race at Bathurst. I know you saw them on this track ut Mt Panorama is special.

I admire anyone who can get a half decent shot of cars travelling at speed, well done,
David
