I had every intention of heading out Sunday morning and finding a building I thought would suit the theme but rain and cold ruined my plans. There are many streets in Launceston complete with both Georgian and Victorian structures so it would have been a comparatively easy task to find one suitable for the theme for week. From my archives an old church not as old as some buildings in Launceston but with its own character.

Settled by Europeans in March 1806, Launceston is one of Australia's oldest cities and is home to many historic buildings. Like many Australian places, it was named after a town in the United Kingdom - in this case, Launceston, Cornwall.

The effects of the 1843 Great Disruption of the Church of Scotland over the question of separation of State and Church were felt in the colony, and a Free Church Presbytery was set up in 1853, 'holding the principles of the Free Church of Scotland'. Free Kirkers erected a Chalmers Church in both Hobart and Launceston #1859#, named after their Scottish leader, Thomas Chalmers.

The many efforts made to promote union between the two Presbyteries in Tasmania were finally successful in 1896, and the Presbyterian Church of Tasmania embraced all congregations of an undivided Church. In 1901 the Presbyterian Church of Australia was formed whereby the state churches federated yet preserved their separate identities.

Chalmers Church was deconsecrated in 1981 and is now under private ownership. The rather scabrous look is a result of incorrect use of an anti damp paint applied some years ago, $250,000 would be required to repaint the structure.

Heaven have mercy on us all - Presbyterians and Pagans alike - for we are all somehow dreadfully cracked about the head, and sadly need mending ~ Herman Melville

Superb exposure, colours, contrast and sharpness with detail visible on the gargoyle heads at the bases of the tower's false buttresses. My sort of building too.
Maybe I would crop and clone the mass of dark, detached overhanging branches - apart from that the composition is perfect.
Is this church built from local stone or imported sandstone?
Over here we tend to clean but not paint our old buildings.

Nice sky, exposure, colors, and details look great.
I suggest a clone of the leaves up top, and a bit more space right to improve your comp.
Have a great Sunday Smile

The contrast between the lightness of the church tower and the blue sky helps to bring a 3D feel to the composition.

I think I would have given more space on the right also but I don't think I would have cloned out the leaves on the top... together with the leaves on the left and the bottom these leaves serve as a partial framing for the church tower.

Composition and clarity are top notch, here. Apart from the leaves clone rightly mentioned by others, I'd leave everything as is.

Perfect exposure - just doesn't get any better than this - the whites are perfect and the details are all tack sharp. Very nicely done!

David, Hi:

I looked at your Sunday Theme Composition. Than skipped to the quote - and smiled. Than read the notes.

I love the architecture and your presentation of it against that brilliant blue sky. Marvelous Image to see and appreciate - great for the Theme.

Have a great week.

This is a stunning shot of a beautful building - looks like something from a Disney story. Lovely details in the white tower - I would like to see others of this David if you have them.
Thanks Paula
