.... then this will be happening again. I find Red deer stags fairly uninteresting as a photographic subject except during the rut and even rather ridiculous when they lose their antlers. At other times than the rut, captures of Red deer are either of their backsides as they run off or if they are unawares then they are simply eating. During the rut everything becomes more animated with the stags either rolling in their wallows, fighting or roaring like this or doing 'erm, other things.
Awkward shooting exposure-wise and a longish creeping session to get close enough to avoid trees in the way. Shooting from dark to a light background, wide open at 1/60th on a 200mm focal length.

I like the pose with the roar of the Red Deer stag and the actual pose of the creature with the antlers lying out along the body of the stag. The coloring of the stag's body stands out well against the surrounding greenery with the catchlight in the eye focusing my attention which in turn leads to the creature's antlers.

Great shot Vic and excellent stalking skills to creep up on this one so close!! The exposure looks spot-on to me and for 1/60th sec very sharp too. A great reward for your patience!!
Regards
Vic.

A good use of the rule of thirds with the animal taking up two thirds of the image and facing the right way and in a good pose-----it looks as if you were able to get fairly close too-----good exposure and detail---my only not pic is the f/g branch beside his back legs----I know it could be easily cloned out-----yes-- I too am eagerly awaiting September and October for better light, a slight mist and some different photo ops. Love the fall------can't wait----Lynne

I love your focus on this love sick red deer. Especially like how you've surrounded him with slightly burred grasses and trees and made him tack sharp so he really pops. Exceptional!
